A boy, his father and a journey into the deep

At the start of the pearling season, six-year-old Saeed sets out on his first voyage into the Arabian Gulf with his father, who has promised to teach him to dive for pearls. Leaving his family on shore, they join the crew of a traditional pearling dhow for a summer at sea.

As Saeed discovers the extraordinary world beneath the waves, he also encounters the dangers of the divers’ lives: storms, sharks and the constant uncertainty of the sea. Guided by his father and the experienced crew, he begins to understand the knowledge, courage, faith and cooperation on which their lives depend.

Based on Julia Johnson’s carefully researched book, The Pearl Diver offers a window into the UAE’s pearling heritage before the discovery of oil. At its heart, it is a story about the bond between father and son, the strength of family and community, and the traditions that have helped shape Emirati life.

A story with learning at its heart

First published in 2003, The Pearl Diver has sold more than 40,000 copies and has been used in the UAE school curriculum.
